Now that it is 3-3 and hasn't had a national title contender late into the season since 2009, USC needs a proven winner as coach to get back on track. Sure, the Trojans could get someone like Chip Kelly, who would probably be successful. Or they could get someone they know would be successful, like ...
Dan said that one of the coaches on the USC alums/boosters wish list...Pete Carroll.

It's not just Dan Patrick saying this. FOX's Bruce Feldman says that Carroll could potentially leave and would be welcomed back with open arms, despite the fact that he got the program in trouble with the NCAA. Carroll left USC with the sanctions about to come down, but he did not receive a show-cause penalty (like Chip Kelly and Jim Tressell did), and it wasn't USC that chose for him to leave. The Seattle Seahawks, the team Carroll currently coaches, are a disappointing 2-4, so maybe he would want to come back.
UPDATE, 8:09 ET: Per ESPN's Sheil Kapadia, Carroll is not interested.
Full Carroll quote: “I love USC. It’s a great place. Flattered, I appreciate it, Dan, but that’s not happening. We’re in good shape here.”
