No college football team identifies more with a former player than Auburn does with Cam Newton.
One reason is that it's just plain good business to be associated with the NFL MVP, yeah. Another is that Newton and the school remember rallying around each other in gleeful defiance during their NCAA-bothered 2010 title run. And after leaving, Newton came back to graduate, walking as a student past his own statue on campus.
Plus, the Carolina Panthers have three other Auburn players (RB Cameron Artis-Payne, G Reese Dismukes, G Tyronne Green), and the Denver Broncos have none. So this is about the easiest rooting interest a school could have.
The Tigers are in the house in Santa Clara, too.
