The Troy Trojans upset No. 25 LSU on Saturday in Baton Rouge, 24-21. It’s LSU’s second ugly loss of the year (after a 30-point drubbing at Mississippi State two weeks ago), and getting beaten at home by a Sun Belt team is never good.
Three ways Troy is really going to rub this in:
1. Taunting LSU on Twitter about it already:
Hey @LSU, thanks for having us down for homecoming! We really enjoyed it!
— Troy University (@TROYUnews) October 1, 2017
THEY HIT ‘EM WITH THE SMILEY EMOJI.
Goodness.
2. Taking $985,000 of the Tigers’ money and giving them a loss in return.
That’s the guarantee amount LSU is paying Troy, according to the Montgomery Advertiser. Every Power 5 non-conference home game against a mid-major involves money changing hands in that direction, but $985,000 is on the steeper side. Some guarantees exceed $1 million. Some are in the $500,000 range.
When LSU agreed to pay Troy that sum, the Tigers did it because they thought they were paying for a relatively easy win. Instead, their season’s in shambles and they’re almost $1 million poorer. But other than that, it worked out well.
3. To reiterate this point, it was LSU’s homecoming.
What a great time all those LSU alums probably had reconnecting with their alma mater. Talk about a nostalgic experience.
