Fantasy football QB rankings, Week 5: Quiet weekend for quarterbacks

Can Philip Rivers maintain his hot start? That's one of the things we look at this week, along with our Week 5 quarterback rankings.

Donald Miralle

There were a few amazing games put up by fantasy quarterbacks through the first three weeks of the NFL season and not many of us were complaining about the production from that position on our squads. The fun had to end at some point, however, and that point was apparently Week 4. The usual suspects (Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Tom Brady) and a few others put up good games, but a regression to the mean was bound to happen eventually.

Philip Rivers continues to impress this season. He has passed for at least three touchdowns in three of his first four games. He has also passed for over 400 yards in two of those games. Making this really impressive is that he's doing it with a very basic supporting cast. Rivers faces Oakland this weekend and, based on his past games against the Raiders, I expect another great game for fantasy owners. Looking at the rest of his schedule, I think he'll be able to sustain this run. I expect him to struggle when he faces the Chiefs and possibly the Broncos, but otherwise it looks like smooth sailing.

Tom Brady is coming off his best fantasy game of the season. I own him in a couple of leagues and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned after the first three weeks of the season. Brady is the originator of making his supporting cast look better than they really are. Two veteran receivers returning shortly to the lineup in Gronk and Amendola should also give him a nice boost. Cincinnati will be a good test for him this week, but he's played very well against them in his career. I'm thinking he'll throw for 275 yards and at least two touchdowns.

Brady's opponent on the other hand, Andy Dalton, has not played as well as expected. Dalton has a great group of receivers and backs to work with, too, so his struggles are a bit surprising. Matt Ryan blew up the Patriots defense with over 400 yards passing last week so this might be just what Dalton needs to get going. I like him as an option for those who need a bye-week replacement.

Joe Flacco has a couple 300-yard games in the first four weeks, but the increase in passing attempts have led to an increase in interceptions. The Ravens offense is built around the running game and Flacco cannot carry this team or fantasy teams on his own. I would stay away if at all possible.

My sleeper pick failed again last week -- and this time he didn't even start. This week's sleepers pick is Sam Bradford. He's facing the dreadful Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jags have not been reaching the quarterback this season and I think that will result in a pretty good game for Bradford. I believe he'll pass for at least 250 yards and  three touchdowns. He's not a bad choice for those with bye-week issues.

Listed below are the top three quarterbacks for passing touchdowns:

1. Peyton Manning - 16
2. Philip Rivers - 11
3. Drew Brees - 10

And the top five quarterbacks for passing yards:

1. Peyton Manning - 1,470
2. Drew Brees - 1,434
3. Matt Ryan - 1,330
4. Matthew Stafford - 1,262
5. Ben Roethlisberger - 1,231

Quick Notes: It looks as though John Skelton will be joining the San Francisco 49ers ... Jake Locker will be missing time with hip and knee injuries. The Titans hope he'll return in just a few weeks ... The Minnesota Vikings could have a quarterback controversy brewing. Matt Cassel leading them to a win has certainly stirred things up ... Ben Roethlisberger has a dislocated index finger. The bye week should help with the healing process ... Tampa Bay is contacting all 32 teams in an effort to rid themselves of Josh Freeman. His release looks to be on the horizon ... Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen feels that Terrelle Pryor needs to be completely concussion-symptom free to be allowed to start ... Drew Brees tied his own record with his ninth straight 300-yard passing game ... Tennessee is considering giving a work out to Matt Leinart and David Carr ... The Jaguars have signed Ricky Stanzi ... The Browns will stick with Brian Hoyer at quarterback for the time being.
