E.J. Manuel injury update: Bills QB return at least a month away for fantasy owners

E.J. Manuel is still recovering from his knee injury and won't play Week 7. We break down the fantasy implications.

Rick Stewart

Buffalo Bills quarterback E.J. Manuel (sprained LCL) continues rehab from his knee injury and is not expected to be back on the field for at least another month. This leaves the Bills with the also injured Thad Lewis and the recently signed Matt Flynn. Lewis is expected to start Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

Fantasy Impact: Lewis (foot) practiced in full on Friday and will play on Sunday. He is about to make his second ever NFL start, and fantasy owners can probably do better. In his first start against Cincinnati's stingy defense, he handled himself reasonably well, completing 19-of-32 passes (59.4 percent) for 216 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also added a rushing touchdown and lost a fumble.

Miami's defense gives up the second most fantasy points to running backs and has an average secondary. While he will have Stevie Johnson back in the line up, his supporting cast is relatively weak as C.J. Spiller is also not 100 percent. The Bills are likely to lean heavily on the run game, and there's little reason to believe that Lewis can improve upon last week's numbers, especially if his mobility is limited. He's a low-end QB2.
