Jonathan Stewart not practicing Wednesday, should be dumped by fantasy owners

Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart isn't at practice Wednesday. We break down the fantasy implications.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart was not participating in practice on Wednesday, according to Joe Person of The Charlotte Observer. Stewart is dealing with a knee injury and likely won't practice at all this week. It seems likely that Stewart misses Carolina's Week 16 matchup against the New Orleans Saints.

Stewart has played in just six games this season, making his season debut on Nov. 3 and sustaining his knee injury against the Saints on Dec. 8. He has 48 carries for 180 yards and no touchdowns on the season, and 44 receiving yards off of seven receptions.

The Panthers seem to like him as a starter more than DeAngelo Williams, but he's having a lousy time at staying healthy. The Panthers are fighting for the NFC South crown with the Saints.

Fantasy Impact: Stewart might play in Week 17 against the Atlanta Falcons, but the Panthers could even choose to hold him out then, to keep him fresh for the playoffs. They'll definitely need him, as Williams is slowing down and teams will be focusing on quarterback Cam Newton. However, that means Stewart is useless for your fantasy championship in Week 16 and he should be released at this point. Find another option.
