Cam Newton struggles through win, fantasy day

The Panthers quarterback wasn't very productive for fantasy owners, but the team still won, so they're probably okay with it. We break down the fantasy implications.

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton couldn't get much going Sunday from a fantasy standpoint, but did lead the team on a game-winning drive. The drive culminated in a game-winning touchdown pass to wide receiver Domenik Hixon with 23 seconds left, giving the Panthers a 17-13 win.

Newton completed only 13 passes (on 22 attempts) Sunday, for 181 yards and that touchdown to Hixon. He also threw an interception, and had a season-low 6 rushing yards. The quarterback gained 65 of his 181 passing yards on that final drive.

Fantasy impact: Much of the game was played in abysmal weather, and the Saints have a strong defense that helped keep Newton in check. None of that should be true next week, as the Panthers close out their regular season with a game in a dome against an awful defense, playing at the Atlanta Falcons in Week 17. In other words, Newton will be fine.
