Toby Gerhart injury update: RB ruled out for fantasy owners

The Vikings running back has already been ruled out and won't play in Week 17. We break down the fantasy implications.

Matthew Stockman

Minnesota Vikings running back Toby Gerhart (hamstring) has been ruled out and won't suit up for the team's Week 17 game against the Detroit Lions. He didn't practice all week and has his 2013 season is done.

Fantasy Impact: With starter Adrian Peterson also set to miss the final week, Gerhart would have been in for the starting gig had he been healthy. With both backs out, the Vikings will turn to Matt Asiata and Joe Banyard. Matt Asiata turned in a surprise performance in his first and only start rushing 30 times for 51 yards and three touchdowns. While the touchdowns were nice, his 1.7 yards per carry didn't do much to further his case for more work. Asiata is still likely to get the majority of the carries as Banyard has even less pro-level experience and has never carried the ball in the NFL.

The Lions present a tough test as their run defense gives up the the second fewest fantasy points to running backs. Although owners are better off with Asiata than Banyard, neither is a recommended fantasy play. Asiata is a low-end flex play.
