Matthew Stafford not guaranteed to start Week 3, per report, has bleak fantasy outlook

A battered and bruised Matthew Stafford could sit Week 3, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. We break down the fantasy implications.

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell implied on Monday that quarterback Matthew Stafford could miss time due to soreness, according to Josh Katzenstein of Detroit News.

Stafford received X-rays after Sunday's loss to the Minnesota Vikings, a loss during which he was routinely battered and looked uncomfortable. Caldwell didn't disclose what the X-rays found, but there appears to be ambiguity surrounding his status for Sunday's matchup with an elite Denver Broncos defense.

Fantasy impact: It's not out of the question for fantasy owners to want to bench Stafford on Sunday regardless if he plays, due to the poor matchup at hand. A healthy Stafford would be the Broncos' most challenging matchup this season, but them shutting down Joe Flacco and Alex Smith out of the gate should still give Stafford's owners pause.

Should Stafford take the field on Sunday, he would be a middling QB2 option. Dan Orlovsky, Stafford's backup, isn't on the fantasy radar. Should he start, no defense would make for a better start in fantasy leagues than the Broncos'.
