San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said Monday that starting running back Melvin Gordon “is our back,” despite struggles holding on to the ball, according to Michael Gehlken of The San Diego Union-Tribune. McCoy acknowledged that Gordon cannot put the ball on the ground, but he believes the second-year RB will get it going soon. Gordon has lost late-game fumbles in back-to-back weeks for the Chargers.
Gordon’s fumble troubles aren’t new news. The starting RB struggled to keep the ball throughout college and his rookie season. Despite fumble issues, Gordon has managed to rush for almost 300 yards, has 421 yards of total offense and has scored at least once in every game this season.
Fantasy Impact: Gordon has been a dream for fantasy owners despite fumble problems. He gets almost all of the backfield touches in the Chargers’ offense and scores in every game. With San Diego fully committed to Gordon as their starter, owners can breathe easy knowing the RB1 option will continue to see a high volume of the work going forward.
