Fantasy football start/sit, Week 9: What to do with A.J. Derby on Sunday

A healthy addition to the Broncos receiving corps could close the window on Derby’s fantasy appeal.

Denver Broncos Tight end A.J. Derby may see a reduction in targets when wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders returns to the Broncos lineup Sunday in Philadelphia. Derby led the Broncos in targets, receptions, and yards in Week 7, and he caught the Broncos’ lone receiving touchdown in the last two games Sunday. He only has two games with over 50 yards receiving and two total touchdown so far this season.

The Broncos will have a new QB Brock Osweiler under center Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles are a stingy defense, but they have been burned by tight ends at times this season. They have allowed almost 500 receiving yards and four touchdowns to opposing tight ends, making them the fifth-worst defense at defending the position.

Fantasy impact: Derby would be a great fantasy play this week if Sanders was not in the picture. The Eagles are great against the run and while stingy, can overplay the pass. Osweiler is probably going to throw check downs a lot this game. Unfortunately, Sanders will probably get those looks before Derby. As tight ends go, Derby has some red-zone appeal, but trusting Osweiler is too hard for slim chances.
