Tiger Woods has a well-deserved reputation for rather salty language on the golf course. So it came as no great shock that his advice for Rory McIlroy, whom Woods deposed Monday from the No. 1 ranking in golf, was somewhat X-rated.
McIlroy, who has a chance to regain the top spot with a win this week at the Shell Houston Open, sent a text message on Tuesday congratulating Woods for reclaiming the Official World Golf Rankings throne with his record-tying eighth win at Bay Hill. He said Tiger responded with some pointed advice for his Nike stablemate.
The Houston Chronicle’s Jerome Solomon provided the scant (and scatological), but pointed, details via Twitter:
Rory McIlroy says he got text from Tiger this morning telling him to "get my finger out of my ass & win this week." #shellhoustonopen— Jerome Solomon (@JeromeSolomon) March 26, 2013
Speaking of the OWGR, if you noticed a bit of a slowdown trying to access the website for several hours after Woods won for the 77th time on the PGA Tour and claimed first place among his peers, you were not alone.
It would seem that the guy who smashed his SUV into a hydrant in late November 2009 not that far from Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club caused a different type of a mishap after coming full circle from the events that followed that fateful Thanksgiving night.
"We suspect there may be a link," Ian Barker, who operates the ranking site in London, told Steve Elling Monday about whether Woods’ enormous global popularity and the Monday finish -- when workers in "half the world" were still at their computers, searching fervently for official proof that Tiger was back in the driver’s seat -- caused the virtual crash.
As for McIlroy, the two-time major champ snubbed Arnie's invitation to join him at Bay Hill in favor of partying with and watching girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki play tennis in Miami. While in South Beach, McIlroy got some whacks in on a local municipal driving range, according to GolfWorld.
