Phil Mickelson, in flip flops again, remembers last minute to register for PGA Championship

Phil Mickelson made a mad dash to Oak Hill on Wednesday to sign up for the season’s final major.

USA TODAY Sports

Phil Mickelson was not slated to show up at Oak Hill on Wednesday, but it’s a good thing he did. Seems the reigning British Open winner suddenly remembered he had not registered for this week’s PGA Championship, according to GolfChannel.com’s Jason Sobel.

Lefty, whose head may still be in the clouds after lifting his first-ever Claret Jug two weeks ago, arrived at the course in casual wear (the man who specializes in the flop shot is clearly a fan of the flip flop), to sign up for the season’s final major.

UPDATE: One day later, Phil also needed directions on how to get to the 1st tee.

Failure to enlist the day before the start of the tourney would have resulted in a disqualification for the five-time major champion.

Unlike golf’s other fan favorite, Tiger Woods, Mickelson did not practice on the Pittsford, N.Y., track on Wednesday so his appearance was unscheduled. Fortunately, he will make an official appearance on No. 1 at 1:45 p.m. ET Thursday, when he tees off with this year’s other two major titleholders, Justin Rose (U.S. Open) and Adam Scott (Masters).
