Phil Mickelson chooses Chargers Wild Card game in Cincinnati over trip to Maui

Opting for a trip to Cincinnati over Maui in early January?

Rather than join his colleagues out in sunny Maui playing in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, Phil Mickelson opted to make a trip to icy Cincinnati to watch his beloved Chargers in the freezing rain.

Mickelson is a noted San Diego sports enthusiast and this was the first time in four years that the Bolts made the postseason, so Mickelson and his wife Amy decided to fly to Ohio. Gregg Doyel of CBS snapped a photo of the couple outside the Chargers locker room, no doubt waiting to congratulate the team after their upset win over the AFC North champs:

Mickelson, of course, did earn an invite to the season opener at Kapalua by way of his two victories last year at Phoenix and at The Open. But he, along with Tiger Woods, typically wait for the Tour to swing back to the continental states before making their debut. He had no plans to go to Maui even before the Chargers made the playoffs. Jason Dufner, on the other hand, will have to sweat out his Auburn Tigers national championship game on Monday night from a hotel room in Maui.

With the Tour still in Hawaii next week, a trip to Denver could be in the works for the Divisional Round game against the Broncos.

If he does go, he would be the second such golf superstar to take in a Broncos game this year, with Tiger Woods and Coloradan girlfriend Lindsey Vonn attending the Broncos-Chiefs Sunday Night Football game in Week 11.
