2014 Masters leaderboard: Miguel Angel Jimenez going low early

The Mechanic is currently authoring the round of the day and is now just a few strokes off the lead.

Based on the early results, low scores can be had on Saturday at Augusta. Gary Woodland tied a course record with a 30 on the front nine, and now Miguel Angel Jimenez has played his way into a tie for third place. Jimenez currently has the round of the day going and is 3-under overall.

Jimenez made the turn at 2-under on the round before really getting rolling on the back. Back-to-back birdies at No. 10 and No. 11 moved him further into the red. His only setback of the round thus far came with a bogey at No. 12, but it was only a minor blip as he reeled off birdies at the 12th and 13th. Jimenez added another birdie at No. 16 to improve to 6-under on the round. With the surge, he is four strokes off the lead with two holes to play. Barring major issues coming in, Jimenez has a very good chance to be the leader in the clubhouse.

The Mechanic isn't the only player finding scoring opportunities on Saturday. Gary Woodland played the front nine at 6-under and was 7-under through 10. He ran into some issues at Amen Corner with a bogey and a double at No. 11 and No. 12, but is still 4-under on his round. Ian Poulter is 3-under on the day through 12 holes, while Matt Kuchar is off to a good start with two birdies on his first three holes. Going low early could be advantageous if the course plays like it did during the first two rounds. Many players playing in the late afternoon on Thursday and Friday struggled to duplicate some of the low scores from early in the day. The course dries out as the day goes on with the greens becoming even more difficult. If similar issues arise in the third round, Bubba Watson and some of the other players near the top of the leaderboard may come back to the field.
