While most of the golf world turns their eyes to the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, there's still some business left to finish and $4.7 million to hand out at the John Deere Classic. There's also one final spot in the season's third major up for grabs in the Quad Cities region, the top player on the board not already exempt earning that trip overseas to Hoylake.
The John Deere Classic has settled in nicely on the annual PGA Tour rota, and it's well-attended in the country's heartland. But despite some big-name winners in recent years -- Steve Stricker, Zach Johnson, Jordan Spieth -- it maintains the smallest purse of the year, and by a good margin. There are 11 events with purses under $6 million, and the John Deere Classic is the only one south of $5 million. The Frys.com Open has the next lowest purse on this year's Tour, doling out $5M are CordeValle during the fall series wraparound schedule. It's the smallest purse, but the tournament continues to draw a solid field and produce low scores for regular Sunday final round drama.
With such a small purse, this is one of the rare events where the winner doesn't take home a $1M-plus check. The first place payout is set for $846,000 at the 2014 edition. Zach Johnson and Brian Harman are the two contenders coming down the stretch. Johnson has over $34M in career earnings, while Harman has just over $3.4M so it's definitely more of a life-changing paycheck for the latter. Harman is also not in the field at the Open Championship, but a second-place finish would be good enough to get him there if Johnson, who is already exempt, were to win it.
