The 2015 U.S. Open came down to the wire on Sunday with Jordan Spieth eventually prevailing to take home the championship after Dustin Johnson missed a putt that would have forced a playoff. Adding a U.S. Open win to the resume is impressive enough, but he will also walk away with one of the biggest purses in golf. The U.S. Open purse was bumped from $9 million to $10 million this year with the winning payout worth $1.8 million.
The victory gives Spieth back-to-back major championships and two huge paydays to go with them. He won $1.8 million at the Masters and added an identical payout on Sunday. He now has earned $7.8 million on the course this season. His career earnings jump to more than $15 million.
Although a number of players were less than thrilled with the course at times, especially the greens, it tuned out to be an exciting event with the win coming down to the wire. Four players opened the day tied for the lead and the championship remained tight throughout the final round. Johnson took a two-shot lead at one point before falling back with a couple of bogeys. He had an eagle opportunity to win outright, but rolled it past. He then had a short birdie putt to force a playoff, only to see that burn the edge. Spieth and Branden Grace also held shares of the lead late in the round, while Louis Oothuizen posted the initial clubhouse lead at 4-under. While the final groups battled for positioning, some early players put the pressure on with strong rounds. Adam Scott jumped way up the leaderboard to post 3-under after shooting a 64. The complete final leaderboard can be found here.
The $1.8 million first-place prize is worth nearly $200,000 more than what Martin Kaymer won last year when he ran away from the field at Pinehurst No. 2. He won $1.62 million in what was a $9 million purse. This year, however, the USGA upped the overall purse -- and the winning share -- to match other major championships. The Players Championship and PGA Championship handed out $10 million purses last season, while the Masters increased it's purse to $10 million this season.
It wasn't just Spieth walking away with a sizable payday. Thanks to ties, the top 24 players all earned a six-figure payout. The purse was structured so the top four finishers would all earn at least $475,000 while the top nine would each earn a quarter of a million dollars. That ultimately got skewed a bit with several players splitting the purse money for multiple spots due to ties. Johnson missed a chance to force a playoff by an inch, but will take home $877,144 as a consolation prize for tying for second.
The 69 professionals who made the cut also earned slightly more thanks to six amateurs making the cut. Those players are not eligible for purse money, so their would-be winnings are instead added back into the prize pool. Here is a complete look at the final payout.
