The second round of the 2015 British Open was suspended due to darkness late Friday night with roughly a third of the field still on the course. Dustin Johnson will once again go to sleep with the lead. The first-round leader didn't complete his second round, but is at the top of the leaderboard at 10-under.
Heavy rains hit early in the morning at St. Andrews, forcing a weather delay that lasted more than three hours. That pushed tee times for most of the field back well into the afternoon. The late starts plus slow play overall left a lot of golf still to be played Saturday morning. Danny Willett set the pace early, going low after the delay to post 9-under. Johnson began his round at 7-under, but didn't take long to regain the lead. He dipped as far as 11-under on the round before finally carding his first bogey of the tournament. He was on the 14th hole when play was suspended.
There is a lot of golf to be played, but Johnson has been close to flawless thus far. He continues to bomb the ball off the tee, setting up short approach shots into nearly all of the par-4s. He's been aggressive with his short game and is putting well. Other players are also finding success, but Johnson could be tough to beat if he can continue to play nearly mistake free golf.
Jason Day could be Johnson's stiffest competition the rest of the way. He's also using his length off the tee to aggressively attack pins. Day is 8-under, just two shots off Johnson's lead. He will resume play on the 12th green. Like Johnson, Day will be forced to finish his second round early Saturday morning with play scheduled to start at 7 a.m. local time, 2 a.m. ET. The remaining players on the course played as late as possible, even as the grandstands emptied and darkness began to surround them.
Adam Scott shot up the leaderboard on Friday, carding a 5-under round of 67 to get into the clubhouse at 7-under. He's currently tied for sixth place and will have the benefit of not needing to play early Saturday morning. Instead, he will get plenty of rest and have a late afternoon tee time among the final groups. That could prove to be a major advantage if Johnson, Day and others wear down from a long Saturday of golf. Zach Johnson is also at 7-under through 36 holes.
Jordan Spieth remains within range of contention, but wasn't able to make much of a move on Friday. Playing with Johnson, he shot even-par through 13 holes before play was suspended. He is at 5-under for the tournament. Here is a complete look at the leaderboard through the action on Friday.
