Honda Classic purse: Adam Scott and Sergio Garcia battle for $1 million payout

Two veterans, each with around $50 million in career earnings, are the clear favorites late at the Honda Classic, where a win would mean much more than the prize money.

The entire final round of the Honda Classic has been a two-horse race between a couple world-class veterans who do not exactly need the $1-million-plus payday. Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott started Sunday with a share of the lead, and the next closest chaser was a good four shots back. A lead can come undone in a hurry at the Honda Classic, with water creeping up along almost every fairway and green. And that final group still has to navigate the "Bear Trap" stretch from Nos. 15-17, where Scott made a quadruple bogey on Saturday to come back to Sergio. But it's still likely that one of those two walk away with another PGA Tour win.

The winner will take home $1,098,000 of the overall $6.1 million purse. That's obviously a huge payday but for Scott and Sergio, who have $47,648,298 and $53,859,234 in career earnings respectively, getting a win at the start of this pre-Masters prep stretch would be much more important. Garcia's last win came in Qatar, a little more than two years ago, and his last PGA Tour win was at the 2012 Wyndham Championship. Scott has not won on the PGA Tour since the 2014 Colonial, which boosted him to No. 1 in the world rankings for a brief few weeks. The cash is obviously secondary to breaking those winless streaks.

The $6.1 million purse seems like a lot for us weekend hacks, but it's relatively small for the PGA Tour and especially for an event that's become a powerhouse with a deep field in recent years. For comparison, last week's Northern Trust Open doled out $6.8 million and the Pebble Beach Pro-Am the week before that totaled $7 million. Almost every event on the PGA Tour (non wrap-around schedule) has a purse over $6 million.

We'll update the official payout totals when the leaderboard goes final.

UPDATE: Scott edged Sergio, holding on by a shot, banking another $1M and inching closer to that $50M mark for his career. The final payout totals:
