By golf standards, the FedExCup is still in a nascent stage. This great playoffs experiment started just over a decade ago and began against a wall of skepticism bordering on outright mockery. There may be some alterations coming and the schedule may be changing in a couple years, with a move to August and completion before the rest of the sports world is swallowed whole by football. But while it's still a relatively new creation, it's here to stay and has been a success. There is meaningful golf well past the final major of the season, with all the big names and top stars playing each week for a season-ending goal.
One of the primary reasons those top names consider it a must-play on the schedule and keep showing up year after year? Cash — buckets and mountains and DuckTales-esque swimming pools of money. Each of the four FedExCup playoff events has its own purses of $8.75 million, starting with this week's newly named The Northern Trust. Only the majors, WGCs, and recently amplified events named for Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer have bigger purses on the schedule. Getting four in a row with purses pushing $9 million is an extremely good way to make a boatload of cash if you hit a hot streak in September. The top 21 spots have a good chance of making six figures each week.
These four big purses are also just a part of the FedExCup cash pie. There's also that bonus money, what's become almost the signature of the playoffs. There's $35 million in bonus money available around the playoffs, with the grand prize of $10 million going to the winner of the whole thing in Atlanta in a month. Even the 25 players who don't qualify for the playoffs, the 126-150 spots on the FedExCup standings at the end of the year, still get $32,000 in bonus money. The 25 players eliminated this week at The Northern Trust will get $70,000 in bonus cash.
