The current No. 1 men's and women's tennis players in the world, Maria Sharapova and Novak Djokovic, will be carrying the flags of their nations at the opening ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics. Sharapova will become the first female tennis player ever to be her nation's flag bearer at the Olympics. Sharapova is representing Russia and Djokovic is representing Serbia, both in singles tennis.

Sharapova announced the news on her Facebook page on Wednesday.

Finally I can share some exciting news with you! After the third round of the French Open, I woke up to a pretty memorable message. The Russian Olympic committee chose me to be the flag bearer at this years Olympic opening ceremony. I am so honored, and especially excited as it will be my first Olympics in my career. I have had to keep this hush hush for two weeks and keeping secrets is not my best quality!

The announcement was not unexpected, as rumors started circulating that Sharapova would be named Russia's flag bearer earlier in the week. Sharapova and Djokovic are currently the only tennis players who have been announced as flag bearers for their countries, but Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are believed to be in the running in their native countries of Spain and Switzerland.
