Rory McIlroy tells Liverpool crowd he's Man United fan, gets booed

New, comment

Rory McIlroy won the British Open -- and then the crowd turned on him.

Mike Ehrmann

Rory McIlroy just won the British Open at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, and the Merseyside crowd cheered hard for the Northern Irish boy as he pulled away from the competition after a dominant four-day performance.

Well, they cheered for him -- until he said one little thing:

NOTE: DO NOT ADMIT MANCHESTER UNITED FANDOM IN FRONT OF PEOPLE FROM LIVERPOOL. THEY DO NOT LIKE PEOPLE WHO LIKE MANCHESTER UNITED. THEY DO NOT LIKE PEOPLE WHO LIKE MANCHESTER UNITED EVEN A LITTLE BIT.

This is probably the most violent booing in the history of any golf tournament ever. And it happened to a guy everybody seems to like, after he just won a big championship.

For context, read the Wikipedia page about the rivalry, which includes sentences such as "usually played at lunchtime due to media interest and to discourage fans from drinking before the game" and "the level of abuse was absolutely sickening."
