Stephen Curry's mom fines him for turnovers

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Stephen Curry is a leading MVP candidate that has/had one recurring weakness: his high turnover numbers. The Warriors' guard is the king of the one-handed whip pass out of the pick and roll, which leads to many highlights, but also several miscues.

Curry's solution to addressing this problem: involve money and his mother. From the San Francisco Chronicle:

Sonya came up with the idea of fining her son a few seasons ago, frustrated at watching him lose the ball too many times in one game. She checked with her husband, former NBA guard Dell, on what would be a reasonable number of turnovers to hold Stephen to per game; they settled on three. Anything more than that, he owes his mother: $100 per giveaway. Anything under is subtracted from his total.

This is the third year this bet has taken place. By my math and Basketball Reference's game logs, this is how much Steph owed his mother at the end of the year:

  • 2012-13: $1,200
  • 2013-14 (including playoffs): $7,600
  • 2014-15 (so far): $600
Sonya Curry got some really nice fashion accessories last year, but Curry's not letting that happen again. Guess the bet is working.
