Formula 1 driver walks away from horrifying crash that sent his car airborne

It's hard to know how Fernando Alonso and Esteban Gutierrez are OK following this horrific crash at the Australian Grand Prix, but they are -- and that's all that's important. Alonso tried to take the outside line on the 17th lap of the race, but didn't expert Gutierrez to brake as sharply as he did. This resulted in the Spanish driver running over the back of his fellow driver, destroying his front tire and sending him into the wall.

Despite going airborne, the car flipped in such a way that minimal impact was put on Alonso -- well, as little as you can expect from a crash this horrific. He was OK and Gutierrez immediately checked on his competitor.

Alonso's first thoughts following the crash was his mother, who'd be watching from home. He knew he needed to get out of the car quickly in order to make her feel better.
