The list of people in the world athletic enough to play professional football in the NFL is not very long. The list of people able to do so while also remaining good enough to play rugby at the international level is much, much shorter. As a matter of fact, it appears to be just one person.
New England Patriots defensive back Nate Ebner started playing football in college during his junior year. He hadn't had time for such frivolous pursuits before because he was busy playing international rugby. It turns out he was really good at football, and ended up getting a shot in the NFL. Now with a Super Bowl ring, Ebner is taking some time off to play rugby again and is STILL GOOD ENOUGH TO BE ON THE U.S. NATIONAL TEAM.
So maybe this wasn't the most exciting way to restart his rugby career, but still, he's good enough to play with some of the best in the world at two different, incredibly violent sports. I'll let you be the one to tell him he got laid out here. I'm keeping my mouth shut.
Ebner's ultimate goal? Playing in the Olympics.
