Alfredo Simon Being Held In Prison Pending Ballistics Results

Baltimore Orioles reliever Alfredo Simon is currently being investigated for his role in the New Year's Eve fatal shooting of a 25-year-old man in the Dominican town of Luperon. Earlier on Monday, it was reported that Simon would be held in prison without bail for (up to) a year until the start of his trial. We now have a little more on the situation.

Updating the previous report, Dan Connelly says that Simon is actually in prison for the time being in Santiago pending the results of ballistics tests. Authorities are looking to confirm that the bullet that struck and killed Michael Esteban Castillo Almonte came from Simon's gun.

These tests usually only take a few days to complete, and after they're done, a decision will be made as to whether to release Simon or file formal charges. He has not yet been charged with any crime, and has cooperated with the investigation.

Information coming from the Dominican pertaining to the case has been inconsistent, but it is being reported that the victim was more than just a friend of Simon's - it seems he was Simon's cousin. The 17-year-old brother of the victim, who was struck in the arm, is being treated in the hospital.
