Can Undisciplined Hitters Find Some Discipline?

New, comments

I wrote about the Orioles -- and specifically, Adam Jones and Matt Wieters --  just yesterday, and here comes Beyond the Boxscore's Daniel Moroz with a timely look at players' ability to improve their plate discipline. Money shot:

This isn't to say that this is what to expect from any one player (it's a basic look at the careers of a small group of guys), or that significant progress is impossible. It does leave me a little less sanguine about Adam Jones' chances of becoming an impact hitter unless he starts elevating the ball enough to hit 30+ home runs though.

Essentially, when you look at a group of players with poor control of the strike zone, you find that they just don't change much. Some improve significantly (Sammy Sosa) and some decline significantly (Shawon Dunston), but generally hitters are what they are.
