David Ortiz rumors: 'Time to move on' if Red Sox won't offer multiyear deal

Ortiz said he'd like to finish his career in Boston, but will seek a multiyear deal elsewhere if the team doesn't offer one.

David Ortiz will be a free agent after the season, and he'd like to retire as a member of the Red Sox. However, he said would "move on" if the team refuses to offer him another multiyear deal in an interview on Boston CBS4's "Sports Final" (via ESPN Boston's Gordon Edes).

Despite turning 38 shortly after the World Series, Ortiz has managed to remain an incredibly productive hitter.

Since turning 35 after the 2010 season, Ortiz has posted a .311/.401/.571 batting line with 82 homers, 259 runs batted in, and a 1.06 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He's been equally impressive in the postseason, highlighted by an outlandish 1.948 OPS in the World Series last year.

Ortiz has played for the Red Sox since signing with the team as a free agent in 2003. He said he'd like to stay with the team if possible.

"As long as they keep offering me a job and I keep doing what I'm supposed to do and the relationship keeps on building up, I'm going to be there. Hopefully, I won't have to go and wear another uniform."

The Sox were in a similar situation with Ortiz before the 2013 season, but the two sides were able to come to an agreement on a two-year deal. Unless Ortiz makes unexpected salary demands, it seems likely that the team will keep one of their best hitters -- and a franchise icon -- around for the foreseeable future.
