MLB roundup: John Axford out as Indians closer, Mariner Moose finds a friend

A look back at Saturday's action in baseball.

Jason Miller

John Axford and his 4.91 ERA have been removed as the closer of the Indians by manager Terry Francona, according to reports out of Cleveland on Saturday.

Signed before this season, Axford had previously spent his career in the National League as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals. The former Brewers closer has given up a career-high number of walks per nine innings -- 8.0 BB/9, to be exact -- which has led to a WHIP of 1.773 and  career-low K/BB ratio of just 1.15. His struggles this season are a continuation of a decline that began in 2012 which led him to be traded by the Brewers to their divisional rival for a player to be named later.

While no replacement has been named, it appears that a group consisting of Cody Allen, Scott Atchison, Marc Rzepczynski and Bryan Shaw could all get chances to fill the role.
