The World Baseball Classic takes another step closer toward the semifinals with three games on the slate for Monday. Things start early with a nice matchup between Cuba and Japan, the two teams that met in the first WBC final way back in 2006.
Vladimir Banos will take the mound for Cuba after shutting out China in a 6-0 win to open the tournament. The 34-year-old will be facing Japanese star Tomoyuki Sugano, who has posted a 2.34 ERA over four seasons with the Yomiuri Giants.
That game actually takes place during the night in Tokyo, and Cuba plays again on Wednesday afternoon, when it’ll still be Tuesday night in the United States. The Cubans will be facing Netherlands in that game.
And in Group F, the Dominican Republic takes on Puerto Rico in a matchup full of MLB names. Cardinals right-handed pitcher Carlos Martinez will start for the Dominicans.
