Gorkys Hernandez made an incredible, home run-robbing catch. Until he didn’t

What a ca- wait never mind.

The Giants were down to the Phillies by five runs already in the bottom of the fifth inning, and San Francisco outfielder Gorkys Hernandez almost kept it that way. Carlos Santana hit a deep ball to center and, well, let’s let the video tell the rest of the story.

So close!

That ball was fully in Hernandez’s glove at one point and based on the way he landed the announcers even thought he had held on to it, completing an amazing catch to rob Santana of the home run and keep Philly’s lead at a somewhat manageable level. But nope.

The way Hernandez jumped is what did him in since he made his move a little too far out and thus got rattled when he hit the fence mid-air. So close, and yet so far. That home run put the Phillies up 8-0 and they’d only extend the lead more after that. Rough night for the Giants, but an even rougher night for Gorkys and his glove.
