The American League Wild Card Game matchup is set, with the New York Yankees in the play-in game for the second consecutive season. They will play the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Yankee Stadium in The Bronx.
The Yankees clinched a playoff berth on Saturday, and the A’s did the same on Monday, Oakland’s first postseason appearance in four years. The A’s were under .500 as late as June 16, but their 61-27 surge since June 16 is the best mark in baseball.
The winner of the Wild Card Game will advance to play the Boston Red Sox in the AL Division Series, which will begin Friday, Oct. 5 at Fenway Park in Boston.
The Yankees and A’s have met three previous times in the postseason — the 1981 ALCS, the 2000 ALDS and 2001 ALDS — with New York winning all three series.
The AL Wild Card Game will be broadcast on TBS, which will televise all of the American League playoffs, through the ALCS.
