After taking the checkered flag during Sunday's 96th running of the Indianapolis 500, Dario Franchitti became nearly $2.5 million richer.
Or $2,474,280 richer, to be exact.
The three-time winner earned 19 percent of the overall race purse with the win. The prize money was announced Monday night at the Victory Awards Celebration at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Second place finisher Scott Dixon earned $1.1 million, and Tony Kanaan, who finished third, won more than $635K.
Franchitti became the 10th driver to win at least three 500s, joining Helio Castroneves as the only three-time winner currently racing on the IndyCar circuit. Franchitti led seven times for 23 laps during the race, which set an Indianapolis 500 record with 34 lead changes.
