Dale Earnhardt Jr. was to give fans who had contributed $8,000 to the Dale Earnhardt Jr. Foundation a ride around Charlotte Motor Speedway in a two-seater stock car on Tuesday night, but with NASCAR's most popular personality sidelined with a concussion another driver was needed.

Enter Tony Stewart, who volunteered to fill Earnhardt's seat.

As a sign of gratitude, Earnhardt tweeted a message thanking Stewart for his time.

"We were in a bind and needed some help and the person that volunteered to come in and drive the car was Tony Stewart," Earnhardt said. "So, on behalf of the foundation, Tony, thank you for helping us be able to raise the money tonight that we raised and give these people that paid that money the ride of their life."

Earnhardt is not able to race, as he's still recovering from a concussion sustained during a crash June 12 at Michigan International Speedway. He's missed the past 11 races recovering and will remain sidelined for the remaining seven races of the season. He's hoping to return for the start of the 2017 season, which begins with the Daytona 500 in February.
