Phil Jackson is still retired and not looking to coach, but the Orlando Magic have reportedly reached out to the former Los Angeles Lakers coach to take on a position in the front office. Though a report at the end of May had Jackson declining such a role, it appears that something has changed within the last week. SI.com's Sam Amick reports that the Magic are still pursuing Jackson.
Under this revised plan, Jackson would work remotely (from Los Angeles, Amick surmises) and put in appearances in Orlando for one week each month. Sam Vincent, a former Chicago Bulls player, is reportedly the champion of this plan and would receive a front office position. Jackson would then get to choose the coaches for the team. The leading candidate is Brian Shaw, with Scottie Pippen likely as the lead assistant.
While bringing in Jackson might help keep Dwight Howard in Orlando, team CEO Alex Martins wants a general manager that would be involved in the day-to-day operations and be in the office. The team ownership has yet to reveal its hand on the matter.
