NBA 3 on 3 Tournament Results: The First True Upset

Three fourths of the way through the first round of our theoretical NBA 3 on 3 Tournament, we finally have our first big upset.

In Tuesday's 6-11 matchups, both 11 seeds advanced. In the Eastern Conference, the 11th-seeded Detroit Pistons, featuring Rodney Stuckey, Jonas Jerebko and Greg Monroe, knocked off Jameer Nelson, Arron Afflalo and Gustavo Ayon of the Orlando Magic. However, this one wasn't really an upset -- at least not according to our panel of experts, who gave Orlando just a 31 percent chance of taking advantage of the better seeding (meaning the Magic wanted rolls of 31 or less). The dice came up 84 and 45, giving Detroit a two-game sweep. The Pistons move on to the second round, where they will face the Pacers.

Out West, we got a bona fide upset. This time it wasn't just the seeding, but also the experts who thought the Denver Nuggets would beat the Phoenix Suns. The experts gave Andre Iguodala, Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari a 66 percent chance to defeat a Suns team consisting of Goran Dragic, Jared Dudley and Marcin Gortat. Needing rolls of 67 or greater to win a game, the Suns got a sweep of their own with rolls of 83 and 95. This proves that Jacob Padilla of Bright Side of the Sun was correct when he wrote that the Suns would win on the strength of their pick and roll (or more accurately, it proves nothing of the sort, and only shows that sometimes you randomly roll really big numbers). The Suns get the privilege of facing the Lakers in the second round, where they'll no doubt need some big rolls again.
