The Lakers lost so much more than a basketball game on Wednesday night.

Byrant crumbled to the ground in obvious pain when he landed on the foot of Atlanta Hawks guard Dahntay Jones, and stayed down for several minutes while team trainers tended to him. After being helped up, he hobbled to the bench and headed to the locker room as the game was out of hand.

The defensive play by Jones could appear questionable to some. As seen in the .GIF, Jones doesn't give Bryant much room to land after his shot attempt. It's a similar defensive strategy that earned Bruce Bowen a reputation as one of the league's dirtiest defenders while he was on the Spurs.

The loss of Bryant for any length of time will be a major blow to the Lakers and their chances of maintaining the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Bryant was instrumental in the Lakers' attempt at a fourth-quarter comeback in Wednesday's game, finishing with 31 points on 11-of-33 shooting from the field. He'll have a day of rest before the Lakers head to Indianapolis to take on the Inidana Pacers on the road.
