The NBA draft lottery awarded the Boston Celtics with the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NBA draft. The Los Angeles Lakers will select second and the Philadelphia 76ers third.
The presumed top pick in the draft is Washington’s Markelle Fultz, but with just more than a month until a decision is necessary, Kansas’ Josh Jackson and UCLA’s Lonzo Ball could play their way into his spot.
The Lakers escaped what could have been a disastrous night by landing in the top three of the draft. Had it fallen below, its pick would have been awarded to the Sixers by way of the Steve Nash trade in 2012. The Phoenix Suns sent the Lakers’ pick they received in the trade to the Sixers in a later trade involving Brandon Knight.
The Celtics may be the biggest winners, receiving the Brooklyn Nets’ No. 1 pick by way of a pick swap they received in the infamous 2013 Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce trade. Their roster this season is good enough to make the Eastern Conference Finals. Now they’ll add another high lottery pick to the fold.
