The Suns’ run to the NBA Finals last year was no fluke. Phoenix had the second best record in the West, and the third best net rating in the league during the regular season. While they ultimately fell two wins short of a championship, the Suns bring back every key piece from last season with their sights set on running it back. The young core of Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton, and Mikal Bridges will each keep getting better. The real reason the Suns are all in though is because of the presence of Chris Paul. CP3 will turn 37 years old before the playoffs, and only has so many good years left. The Suns want to make another deep run while Paul can still play at a star level.
Championship, this time around. The Phoenix Suns had a 2-0 lead in the 2021 Finals before the magic ran out on their season. With Chris Paul continuing to play at All-NBA level, and the further development of young stars Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton and Mikal Bridges, the Suns are even better in 2022!
Short of injuries, which can derail any team, the worst case for the Suns is that Chris Paul suddenly gets older, the young guys stagnate and the rest of the league plays a ton better, leaving the Suns fighting for a play-in spot.
The Suns will most likely improve a bit because of the development of their young guys but maybe not win at the same 70% rate, finish 2nd or 3rd in the West and hit the playoffs ready and able to defend their Western Conference crown.
I am most excited to see further development from Deandre Ayton and Mikal Bridges into All-Defense players who are in the All-Star conversation in February, while Devin Booker grows even more into a new-age Chris Paul who does whatever it takes to win games. No NBA player has won more games than Booker in the past 15 months, since the Bubble started, and I look forward to seeing him continue this work!
