The Arkansas Razorbacks are in need of a head coach and for the first time in decades, the next guy actually has something to live up to. Speculatively, the top candidates for the time being are going to be Arkansas State head coach, state high school football coaching legend and former Hogs coordinator Gus Malzahn and Garrick McGee, who was on Petrino's staff until taking over the UAB job just months ago.
But that's not all!
In today's piece on Petrino's exit, I ran through a few names, including Malzahn, McGee, Louisiana-Lafayette's Mark Hudspeth, Louisiana Tech's Sonny Dykes, Baylor's Art Briles, Alabama's Kirby Smart and Texas' Manny Diaz. It's fun to make lists, though, and it's even more fun to make lists of lists.
The most sensible Arkansas fans I know of have been touting McGee's name for days now, while we've compiled below mighty fine lists by Arkansas Expats, Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports, Clay Travis of Outkick The Coverage, College Football Talk's John Taylor, Athlon Sports' Steve Lassan and LostLettermen.com. Also, Matt Hayes of the Sporting News recommends Malzahn and only Malzahn.
Let's get to spreadsheetin'. I believe all non-joke mentions were included, in order of appearance:
