Texas A&M Football: No Starting Quarterback Just Yet

Texas A&M's quarterback competition is down to either two or four guys, depending on how you look at it.

Having given up Ryan Tannehill to whatever the NFL Draft may make of him, Texas A&M is in the market for a new starting quarterback as they prepare to enter the SEC. As spring ball winds down, the Aggies still don't have a starter, making them one of darn near half the teams in the conference without a specific direction at the position.

The four young men battling for the honors are Jameill Showers, sophomore Matt Joeckel, redshirt freshman Johnny Manziel and freshman Matt Davis, a four-star recruit.

Said Kevin Sumlin this week:

"We don't have a starting quarterback right now," he said. "What you saw Saturday is we've got some capable guys but they have to understand their strengths and weaknesses. ... That's not to say Jameill couldn't do it. We've had a little more time than the public did in the hour and a half they saw the other day."

Only Showers has any game experience, having lofted a handful of tosses last year. He's also got the dual threat thing going for him, which is always nice. Some observers have felt he's been the best in A&M's spring efforts thus far, with Manziel showing up in second.
