2013 NFL Mock Draft: We have a new No. 1 pick

For the first time in months, I have a new pick for the Kansas City Chiefs at No. 1. West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith has been the pick for a while, but it appears the Chiefs could be closing in on San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith. That opens the door for them to address other needs. It's tough to tell whether the Chiefs will bring back Brandon Albert, so the Chiefs address the defensive line with this pick. Sheldon Richardson's measurements were a bit disappointing, but he's a versatile, impact player with a big motor.

The NFL Scouting Combine was full of LEO talk when Gus Bradley hit the podium on Saturday. Bradley said that Jason Babin fits the position, but Barkevious Mingo would add some youth at pass rusher, something the Jaguars desperately need. Mingo may have turned some people off when Sam Montgomery admitted the two have quite the betting history. Other candidates for this pick could include Sharrif Floyd, Jarvis Jones, Dion Jordan, Ezekiel Ansah and (wait for it) Tank Carradine.

The unfortunate news about Star Lotulelei's heart condition shakes up the top of the draft. Until we know more details, it's tough to put him in the top 10. Geno Smith had an excellent combine, both on the field and in the media room. He mentioned the Raiders immediately when asked about teams he's visited with and it seems like a natural fit. If another team is interested, they could easily jump up and trade with either the Chiefs or Jaguars to get the West Virginia quarterback.

This pick comes back to Luke Joeckel. Projecting trades in mock drafts is a practice in insanity. If the Chiefs pass on Joeckel, teams will be fighting to move up and draft him. The Eagles will be happy to have him here, and he should be comfortable in Chip Kelley's scheme.

We've had this connection in a previous mock and it continues to make sense. The Detroit Lions worked closely with Ezekiel Ansah at the Senior Bowl and desperately need help at defensive end. Ansah could be the missing piece on Detroit's defensive line.

Dion Jordan's shoulder injury is the only thing keeping him out of the top five picks. He's a player that can dominate in a 3-4 defense. He's the best edge rusher in this draft and excels in coverage. Strength is the only area of concern for Jordan, but he knows it and insists it will be his main focus after rehab.

The Arizona Cardinals need a quarterback, and the Matt Barkley chatter heated up at the combine, but Eric Fisher makes more sense. The offensive line in Arizona is a mess, and Fisher could be plugged in to prove an immediate upgrade. Mike Mayock recently noted that the gap between Joeckel and Fisher isn't as large as some think.

The Buffalo Bills are going to start getting creative with their pass rush under new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. Jarvis Jones is the perfect piece for that defense, which is in need of a linebacker. Jones can provide pressure off the edge and is most comfortable playing in a 4-3.

DaMontre Moore is a sideline to sideline player that has experience in both the 3-4 and 4-3. Opinions vary on which defense best suits his skills, but I like what he's shown playing in space and haven't been impressed with his strength, making him a decent candidate for the 3-4. Rex Ryan needs to find another pass rusher.

He still sits behind Sheldon Richardson in my defensive tackle rankings, but it's close. The Titans could use his versatility on their defensive line.

Lane Johnson is looking like less and less of a reach the closer we get to April. By the time the draft rolls around, Johnson may be considered a top 10 pick. He's among the most athletic tackles available in this draft, and the Chargers need to bolster Philip Rivers' blind side.

Wide receiver has been a popular pick for the Miami Dolphins throughout this process. Cordarrelle Patterson and Keenan Allen have been the common names. But with Allen suffering a setback with his knee, the injury questions drop him just below DeAndre Hopkins on our wide receiver board. Hopkins doesn't have elite speed, but his body control and separation skills will make him effective right away.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers get lucky as need meets value with this pick. Dee Milliner has gotten some hype us a top five prospect, but a lot hinges on his 40 time. He may not time well enough to entice teams in the top 10 to take him. If that's the case, Tampa Bay will get a nice value.

Star Lotulelei is our top-rated prospect, but the news of his heart condition is alarming. Thankfully this was caught before anything serious happened to Star, but until we learn more, it's tough to put him in the top 10. The Panthers are a team that could take a chance on him, though, given their desperate need at defensive tackle.

Xavier Rhodes remains a close second behind Dee Milliner in what is a deep cornerback class. The Saints need to get pressure on the quarterback, but they also need to find some players that can cover. Rhodes has the skill-set to match up against No. 1 wide receivers in the NFL.

The Rams are in position to come away with two solid players and get some value in the middle of the first round. Chance Warmack is just what St. Louis needs on the interior of the offensive line.

The Steelers' roster suddenly has quite a few holes. The team once again struggled in the trenches on both sides of the ball this season. An upgrade in the middle of the defensive line would give the team a whole different feel on that side of the ball. Jesse Williams proved he can eat up double teams and dominate the point of attack at Alabama this season. He would fit in nicely in Pittsburgh.

The Dallas Cowboys are moving to a 4-3 defense, and what better way to start the construction of that new scheme than with Bjoern Werner of Florida State. Werner is not a lock for the top 10 and slides in this mock draft due to the number of 3-4 teams in need of pass rushers. Dallas won't mind the value, though.

This match seems unfair. The Giants, who have been so effective at finding defensive end talent get the best 4-3 pass rusher in this class. The only red flag on Carradine is the torn ACL he suffered back in November. But he plans to workout for scouts before the draft. If he does that, he will be a top 20 pick.

Jonathan Cooper grades out closer to Chance Warmack than most people think. He's the more athletic of the two guards and is well-rounded in most aspects of his game. The Bears need to find talent, regardless of position on the offensive line.

Among the Bengals' biggest needs, along with linebacker and running back, is safety. They need to find someone to play alongside Reggie Nelson. Kenny Vaccro grades out as the top safety in this class due to his strong play at the line of scrimmage and his range and coverage ability in the secondary.

Keenan Allen ranks higher than Cordarrelle Patterson on my board, though I'm not blind to Patterson's upside. Allen's injury causes him to drop a little bit, but he's the total package at wide receiver. He compares favorably to Dez Bryant on the field.

Whether or not Percy Harvin stays with the Vikings, they need to find another weapon in the passing game. Some will be surprised to see Cordarrelle Patterson this low, but he's rough around the edges. Allen and Hopkins are more complete wide receivers in my eyes.

With the top nose tackle talent off the board, the Colts turn to the offensive line, which is another big area of concern for the team moving forward. D.J. Fluker will be confined to the right side of the line in the NFL, but he has enough talent to dominate at that position.

Tavon Austin proved his speed and strength at the NFL Scouting Combine this weekend, solidifying his status as a first round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. He would be an outstanding fit for the Seahawks, who need a wide receiver with speed to play the slot.

If Arthur Brown is available, the Green Bay Packers should run to the podium. The playoff loss to the 49ers exposed the team's weakness in its linebacker core. Brown has put on some size and should be able to play in the 3-4.

Manti Te'o's draft stock is tough to pin down. As a player, he's a mid-to-late first round prospect. Add in the distraction he could bring, and it's tough to tell which teams will want to take a chance on him. He makes sense for Houston because of the leadership in place and the need in the middle of the defense.

Fun fact: Kawann Short actually goes by K.K. That's how he was announced at the NFL Scouting Combine. After a solid Senior Bowl, K.K. should be considered in the later part of the first round.

The Patriots have a certain affinity for Rutgers players. Logan Ryan just so happens to fill a huge need and has value as a first round pick. If the Patriots lose Aqib Talib, cornerback will become an even bigger need.

There hasn't been a draft that hasn't produced a first round running back in the modern era. That shouldn't change this season, despite the buzz surrounding the lack of top-end talent at the position. Gio Bernard belongs in the first round discussion and would fill a need for Atlanta.

Jonathan Cyprien has emerged as one of the top safeties in this class, and the Super Bowl showed San Francisco's warts at the safety position. Consider that the Niners came out of left field to pick A.J. Jenkins a year ago, and it doesn't seem too farfetched that they would go after Cyprien.

With the top linebackers off the board, the Ravens turn to the offensive line, which could become an even bigger need if Bryant McKinnie isn't retained. Menelik Watson has the upside to be the best left tackle in this draft and could develop nicely in Baltimore.
