2013 NFL mock draft: Jarvis Jones to Buffalo Bills

New, comments

Buddy Nix will be hard-pressed not to reach on a quarterback, given his current depth chart.

Entering his fourth year as GM of the Buffalo Bills, Buddy Nix is faced with taking his first high-round quarterback on the job after leaving himself with two quarterbacks (Tarvaris Jackson and Aaron Corp) that did not take a snap anywhere in the 2012 season. Yet Nix has also been a GM that sticks to his board. Will this be his panic year where he reaches for a quarterback, or will Nix stay true to form and be patient at the game's most important position?

Pick Player Position Height Weight Class
8. Buffalo Bills Jarvis Jones, Georgia OLB 6'2" 245 JR

Brian Galliford: "I honestly expected to be gnashing my teeth with this pick, trying to talk myself into taking a second-tier quarterback prospect (Matt Barkley) ahead of other prospects I actually like (such as Cordarrelle Patterson and Dee Milliner). Because if ever there were a year for Buddy Nix to break character, panic, stray from his board and just take a quarterback for once, this is it; the Bills are currently brutal at that position.

"Jarvis Jones, however, could be among the small group of prospects (if it exists) that an old-school talent evaluator like Nix would be unable to pass on for a quarterback. Jones has natural pass-rushing ability, and his two-year production in a power conference like the SEC is difficult to ignore, even with lingering medical red flags. Adding Jones to a lineup already featuring Kyle Williams, Marcell Dareus and Mario Williams would make life much easier for new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine."

Here's our own Dan Kadar to break down the pick:

Don't get too hung up on Jones' poor pro day performance or his health issues. He still finished the last two seasons with 28 sacks and 44 tackles for loss. Buffalo's pick is one of the hardest to make in the Top 10. Everyone knows the Bills want to trade down to add extra picks. But we're not doing trades in this mock. Because of that, Jones should be viewed as a good pick. He should be able to start as a rookie and get after the passer.

We've got one more pick coming up today, and it'll be made by Gang Green Nation for the New York Jets.
