NFL Combine 2016 results: Jason Spriggs leads offensive linemen in 40-yard dash

Jason Spriggs was one of only a handful of offensive linemen to run 40 yards in under five seconds.

Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports

If an offensive lineman has to run 40 yards in a football game, it means something really good or really bad just happened.

But the 40-yard dash still shows a player's athleticism and some of the best offensive linemen in the NFL, such as New Orleans Saints offensive tackle Terron Armstead, showed their abilities by tearing up the track. The more important time is the 10-yard split for offensive linemen, which shows off their burst and explosion off the line of scrimmage.

Unfortunately, the 10-yard split isn't officially timed, but there are no shortage of stopwatches out and at the ready to give unofficial marks.

The player considered the favorite to be the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Laremy Tunsil, did not participate in the drill on Friday, although he did do all the offensive line drills that followed. The Ole Miss offensive tackle said that he will run the 40-yard dash at his pro day at the end of March.

It was Indiana's Jason Spriggs who led the way for offensive linemen with an official time of 4.85 and one of only a handful who broke the five-second mark, although he narrowly edged N.C. State's Joe Thuney by a hundredth of a second.
