2016 NFL mock draft: Baltimore Ravens grab Kendall Fuller

New, comment

The latest Fuller brother is a playmaker but a risky pick in the second round of the SB Nation NFL writers mock draft.

Yitzi Weiss of Baltimore Beatdown is here with the 36th pick in the SB Nation NFL writers mock draft making the choice for the Ravens. After going with Ohio State defensive end Joey Bosa in the round, bolstering the defense remains the priority for Baltimore.

36. Ravens: Kendall Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech

Weiss: The Baltimore Ravens just finished their second consecutive season with issues in their secondary, so they are in need of a long term solution opposite Jimmy Smith. With the move of Lardarius Webb to safety, and the big offseason signing of former Pro Bowler Eric Weddle, the Ravens adding Fuller to their current tandem of Smith and Shareece Wright should shore up the unit in the short and long term.

The biggest area Fuller helps in though is forcing takeaways. Before a 2015 season in which he missed most of the season, Fuller had 24 pass defended and 8 interceptions in his first 2 seasons at Virginia Tech and was considered a top 15 pick. The Ravens defense forced a franchise low takeaways in 2015, so this is an area they are focused on improving. They brought in an experienced secondary coach in Leslie Frazier to help in this area, and he should help Fuller fine tune his craft.

Analysis: This is a gamble. It's true that Fuller was considered in the preseason as a top 15 pick, but he's had a series of injuries. He tore his meniscus before last season started and tried to play through it before having season-ending surgery in September. In 2014, he suffered a fractured wrist. When Fuller is healthy, though, he's been productive. Fuller is a pretty physical player for someone his size and has good instincts. If Fuller stays healthy, this is a good pick up. It's still a gamble, though.
