2016 NFL mock draft: Cleveland Browns select Michael Thomas

After snagging quarterback Jared Goff in the first round of the SB Nation NFL writers mock, Cleveland gives him a target at wide receiver.

In the first round of the SB Nation NFL writers mock draft, the Browns got their quarterback in Cal's Jared Goff. On a talent-depleted roster, what better way to help the new quarterback than with a wide receiver? That's what Christopher Pokorny of Dawgs by Nature has in mind with the No. 32 overall pick.

32. Browns: Michael Thomas, WR, Ohio State

Pokorny: After taking quarterback Jared Goff in the first line, it was tempting to think about drafting an offensive lineman to help protect him after the departures of center Alex Mack and right tackle Mitchell Schwartz. Because the team appears to be keeping their most important piece in left tackle Joe Thomas, though, I deferred to adding a receiving option for the Browns.

Even if the Browns get wide receiver Josh Gordon back from suspension, they could use a big target to complement him on the other side, while Andrew Hawkins slides back to his more natural position as a slot receiver. Gordon is an explosive athlete, but has been panned at times for his route running and effort. Thomas is the opposite: he won’t out-run coverages down the field, but he’ll run solid routes and knows how to use body positioning to rack up catches.

Analysis: The Gordon stuff with the Browns is dubious, at best. The NFL is dragging its feet on his reinstatement and the Browns may not even want him back. Regardless, even with him, it's true that the Browns need wide receiver help. Thomas is an outlier for the Browns. He's a true outside receiver with size and a physical playing style. Thomas is a capable jump ball threat and would become a red zone threat straight away.
