Fighting for a playoff berth, the New York Giants are still having trouble closing out the plucky Washington Redskins.
The Redskins continue to pick up chunks of yardage on New York's defense, but thanks to a record-breaking play by Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora, New York has maintained its 17-7 lead early in the fourth quarter.
With the Redskins ten plays into a lengthy drive and set to cut into the Giants' 10-point lead, Umenyiora exploded around left tackle and sack-stripped Rex Grossman, recovering the fumble himself to preserve possession for the Giants. It was Umenyiora's 11th sack of the season, and the tenth forced fumble of the year as well. That forced fumble set an NFL record for number of forced fumbles in a season.
The Giants may end up playing for pride, however. In need of a win and a Green Bay Packers loss to secure a playoff berth, the Giants are doing their own part well for the time being. Green Bay, however, has jumped out to a 10-3 lead over the Chicago Bears in the fourth quarter - and a Green Bay win would officially eliminate the Giants from playoff contention.
