Ryan Matthews Picks Up 125 Rushing Yards For The Chargers Despite Calf Strain

San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Matthews was questionable to return to the game against the Denver Broncos today. Matthews left the game in the first quarter with a calf strain. At the time, it was reported that his return was questionable.

Matthews’ calf must not have bothered him too much. He finished the game with 24 carries and 125 rushing yards for an average of 5.2 yards per carry.

This game represents Matthews best outing so far this season, as San Diego looks for the second-year running back to assume primary rushing duties. Matthews might be carrying more load be default next week. Fellow running back Mike Tolbert left the game with a concussion, and his status remains up in the air until he can pass the league’s concussion tests.

Matthews now has 413 rushing yards and three touchdowns through five games. He also has 19 catches for 254 yards.
