The Kansas City Chiefs have fired Todd Haley, the team announced on its website Monday morning, saying that Haley has been "relieved of his duties as head coach effective immediately" in a statement.

“This was a difficult decision but one that we feel is best for the future of the Chiefs,” Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said. “Although there have been bright spots at different points this season, we have not made meaningful progress and we felt that it was necessary to make a change. We appreciate Todd’s contributions during his time with the club, and we wish him well in the future.”

Haley compiled a 19-27 record as the Chiefs' head coach after being hired in 2009, and won the AFC West in 2010, but his team's 2011 has been dismal at best, with the Chiefs falling to 5-8 after a 37-10 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday in Week 14.
