Chiefs vs. Steelers results: Pittsburgh edges Kansas City in overtime, 16-13

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, 16-13, on a Shaun Suisham field goal 51 seconds into overtime Monday night.

The Kansas City Chiefs began the night's scoring on a 12-yard touchdown run from Jamaal Charles to give the Chiefs a 7-0 lead. That touchdown marked the Kansas City Chiefs' first lead in regulation this season.

The Chiefs converted a field goal early in the second half to take a 10-0 lead, but Pittsburgh immediately answered with a field goal of its own to cut the lead to seven.

On the following possession, the Pittsburgh Steelers turned the field on Kansas City, forcing the Chiefs to punt from their own 12-yard line and beginning the subsequent possession at midfield. Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh offense then began a seven-play, 50-yard drive, capped off by an amazing, one-handed catch by Mike Wallace to tie the game, 10-10.

On the third play of the second half, Ben Roethlisberger stepped up in the pocket and was sacked by Tamba Hali. Roethlisberger injured his shoulder on the play and did not return.

Backup quarterback Byron Leftwich did not do much offensively but did enough, leading the only scoring drive of the second half -- an 11-play, 73-yard drive ending in a Shaun Suisham field goal to give the Steelers a 13-10 lead.

Despite playing mistake-filled football and showing an inability to take advantage of Pittsburgh mistakes, the Kansas City Chiefs were still given a chance at the end of the game after the Steelers punted following a fourth-and-inches situation. Matt Cassel, with no timeouts, then drove the Chiefs 52 yards in 1:52 and Ryan Succup converted a 46-yard field goal attempt to tie the game as time expired in regulation.

Cassel's late-game heroism went for naught, however, as he was intercepted on the second play of overtime by Lawrence Timmons, who returned the ball to the 5-yard line. The Steelers wasted no time, kicking the game-winning field goal on the first play of their possession to win Monday night's contest, 16-13.

Winners

Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles had the best game statistically. He rushed the ball 23 times for 100 yards and one touchdown. Pittsburgh wide receiver Mike Wallace had only 14 receiving yards but was the recipient of the game's only other touchdown.

Losers

Matt Cassel turned from hero to goat in a matter of minutes. His stat line was dismal as well, with 11-of-26 passes for only 154 yards.

Even considering Cassel's night, Ben Roethlisberger may finish the night as the biggest loser. He passed for only 84 yards and suffered an injury that knocked him out of the game and may cause him to miss time moving forward.

Odds

The Chiefs couldn't find a way to win, but their 3-point loss covered the spread. Pittsburgh was favored to win by 11.5 points.
